SSC CHSL typing test online

The SSC CHSL typing test is a 10-minute qualifying skill test for LDC and JSA posts. You must type at 35 words per minute in English (10,500 key depressions per hour) or 30 words per minute in Hindi (9,000 key depressions per hour). In 10 minutes that means about 350 correct words in English or 300 in Hindi. It adds no marks to your merit, but failing it ends your selection.

The undersigned is directed to refer to the Department's earlier communication on the subject of maintaining office records and to state that a review of the existing arrangements has been carried out. It has been observed that several sections continue to keep files in a manner that makes it difficult to trace papers at short notice. In many cases, notes are added without the date, the name of the officer or the file number, and correspondence received from other offices is kept loose instead of being placed on the relevant file. Such practices cause avoidable delay when a matter has to be examined again or when information is sought under the Right to Information Act. All sections are therefore requested to ensure that every file carries a clear subject, a file number and a list of the papers it contains. Each note should be signed and dated by the officer concerned, and the reference of the paper under consideration should be mentioned at the beginning of the note. Files that have been closed should be recorded and sent to the record room after the action on them is complete, so that the space in the section is used only for current work. Section officers will be responsible for checking the condition of the files in their charge at the end of every month and for reporting any difficulty to the branch officer. The record room will maintain a register of the files received, and no file will be removed from it without a written request. It is further requested that the use of the electronic office system be increased wherever possible, as it allows a file to be traced at any time and reduces the movement of paper between floors. Training on the system will be arranged for those members of staff who require it, and a schedule will be circulated separately. All officers are requested to bring these instructions to the notice of the staff working under them and to ensure that they are followed without exception. A report on the action taken may be sent to this office within thirty days from the date of issue of this memorandum.

How SSC counts your speed

SSC measures typing in key depressions, not in words. One word is treated as five key depressions, including spaces. So 35 wpm becomes 35 × 5 × 60 = 10,500 key depressions per hour, and 30 wpm becomes 9,000.

Over the 10-minute test, English candidates need about 1,750 correct key depressions (roughly 350 words) and Hindi candidates about 1,500 (roughly 300 words). This test shows your key depressions and KDPH so you can compare directly.

Full and half mistakes

SSC's evaluation software marks errors against the passage. Train against both kinds:

  • Full mistakes: a wrong word, an omitted word, an added word, or words typed in the wrong order.
  • Half mistakes: capitalisation slips, spacing errors, punctuation errors and minor spelling deviations.
  • Skipping a line is the most damaging error, because everything after it can misalign with the passage.

LDC/JSA typing test vs DEO speed test

LDC and JSA candidates take this typing test: a 10-minute passage at 35 or 30 wpm. Data Entry Operator posts instead take the Data Entry Speed Test (DEST), measured in key depressions per hour (commonly 8,000 KDPH) over about 15 minutes. Check the post-wise skill test table in your notification.

Typing the test in Hindi

Hindi candidates usually choose between Mangal with the Inscript layout and Kruti Dev with the Remington layout, as offered in the notice or at the centre. Decide months before the test: switching layouts late can cost 8 to 10 wpm.

This free test uses the Inscript layout for Hindi. You can practise Kruti Dev (Remington) on the Typing Orbit software.
