Passage: Modern railway stations0 / 355 words

Railway stations have always been more than places where trains stop. For many towns, the station is the first building a visitor sees and the place where the life of the town begins each morning. In recent years, a large number of stations across the country have been taken up for redevelopment, with the aim of making them cleaner, safer and easier to use. The plans include wider entrances, separate areas for arriving and departing passengers, better waiting halls and clear signs in more than one language. Lifts and escalators are being added so that elderly passengers and persons with disabilities can move between platforms without difficulty. Many stations now have free internet, digital display boards and counters where passengers can buy tickets, book retiring rooms and ask for help in one place. The use of solar panels on roofs and the collection of rainwater are also being encouraged, so that stations consume less energy and water. These changes have been welcomed by most passengers, but they also bring new responsibilities. Facilities remain useful only when they are kept in good condition, and that requires regular cleaning, quick repairs and staff who are trained to deal with the public. Passengers too have a part to play by keeping the premises clean, following the queue at counters and reporting problems to the station staff. A well-run station saves time for everyone, reduces crowding on platforms and makes a journey by train a more pleasant experience. As more stations are improved in the coming years, the railway can hope to attract passengers who now prefer other means of travel. Better stations can also bring new life to the areas around them. When a station is easy to reach and pleasant to use, small shops, food stalls and transport services grow nearby, creating jobs for local people. Planners are therefore trying to connect stations with bus stands, metro lines and parking areas, so that a passenger can change from one mode of travel to another without a long walk. If this work continues with care, the railway station may once again become the proud centre of every town.

How to type with no backspace

Because correction keys are disabled, every slip stays in your text. The goal is not to avoid all mistakes but to stop one mistake from turning into three. This test opens with backspace off for that reason.

  • If you mistype a word, leave it and carry on. Stopping to stare at it costs more than the mistake.
  • Keep your eyes on the passage, not the keyboard, so you don't lose your line.
  • Never retype a word to fix it. Typing it twice adds an extra-word mistake.
  • Slow down slightly in the last two minutes, when most panic mistakes happen.

Practising for an on-screen passage

In the CBTST the passage appears only on the screen, with no printed copy. Your eyes move between the passage and your typing on the same monitor, which is exactly how this test is laid out. Practise with the passage beside your typing so the eye movement feels normal on the day.

English or Hindi?

You type in one language only, the one you chose for the skill test. Hindi has a lower speed (25 wpm) because each Hindi word needs more keystrokes, so it is not an easier option. Pick the language you can type more accurately, not the one with the lower target.

Kruti Dev and Mangal are both offered for Hindi. This free test uses Mangal with the Inscript layout. You can practise Kruti Dev on the Typing Orbit software.
