Passage: Case management in the High Court0 / 512 words

The High Court receives a very large number of fresh cases every year, and the efficient management of these cases depends to a great extent on the work done by the staff of the Registry. Every petition, appeal or application that is presented in the Court must first be examined to see whether it is complete in all respects. The Review Officer checks whether the required court fee has been paid, whether the documents relied upon have been annexed, whether the affidavit has been properly sworn and whether the matter has been filed within the period of limitation. Where defects are found, they are noted and communicated to the counsel concerned so that they may be removed within the time allowed. Once a case is found to be in order, it is registered, given a number and placed before the appropriate Bench according to the roster approved by the Chief Justice. The introduction of electronic filing has changed this process in many ways. Counsel can now file cases from their offices, pay the court fee online and receive notice of defects by electronic mail. The record of each case is maintained in digital form, which allows it to be viewed by the Judge, the counsel and the staff at the same time. This has reduced the movement of paper files between sections and has made it easier to trace the status of a case at any stage. However, the success of such a system depends on the accuracy of the data entered at the time of registration. A wrong name, an incorrect date or a missing document can cause a case to be listed before the wrong Bench or delayed for several weeks. For this reason, the staff of the Registry must type with care and check every entry before it is saved. Accuracy in small details is not a mere formality; it is the foundation on which the speedy disposal of cases rests. The public judges the working of the Court not only by its judgments but also by the ease with which a litigant can learn the status of his case, obtain a certified copy of an order or find the date of the next hearing. A well-organised Registry, staffed by officers who are accurate, courteous and prompt, is therefore as important to the administration of justice as the courtroom itself. Every officer who joins the establishment of the High Court shares in this responsibility from the first day of service. Regular training programmes are therefore organised for newly appointed officers, covering the rules of the Court, the handling of records, the use of the electronic filing system and the manner of dealing with members of the Bar and the public. Senior officers are expected to guide their juniors, to review the work of their sections at regular intervals and to bring any recurring difficulty to the notice of the Registrar. In this way, the experience gained over many years is passed on, and the standards of the Registry are maintained even as the volume of work continues to grow.

Why every typing mark counts here

In most exams the typing test is only pass or fail. At Allahabad High Court, your Computer Knowledge Test marks are added to your Mains marks to make the final merit list. A candidate who scores 42 in typing starts 12 marks ahead of one who scores 30, so aim well above the 25-mark line.

How this test estimates your marks

The advertisement says speed is calculated on the correct words you type within 20 minutes or until you submit, whichever is earlier. It does not publish how words are turned into marks. Because the full 500-word text carries 50 marks, this test estimates 0.1 mark for each correct word.

A correct word is one that matches the passage exactly. Wrong, missed and extra words earn nothing, and so do words with a capital or punctuation slip. There is no negative marking, so a mistake only costs you the mark for that word.

  • 250 correct words: about 25 marks, the qualifying line.
  • 400 correct words: about 40 marks.
  • All 500 words correct: 50 marks.

Finishing before 20 minutes

If you type the whole passage early, you can submit, and your speed is calculated up to the moment you submit. Use any spare time to stay accurate rather than to rush: a correct word is worth more than a fast one. This test ends automatically when you reach the end of the passage.
