RRB NTPC Typing Test 2026: UG CBTST Date, Speed & Error Rules

The RRB NTPC typing test, officially the Computer Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST), is a computer-based test for typist posts such as Junior Clerk cum Typist, held after CBT-2. The widely reported benchmark is 30 WPM English and 25 WPM Hindi, but confirm it and your date in the RRB notice before the exam.

Update note: what changed for the NTPC typing test in November 2026

This guide was first published in September 2026. It has been rewritten for the undergraduate (UG) cycle under CEN 07/2025, now that CBT-1 is over and CBT-2 has been scheduled.

Three things changed:

• Dates are separated from rules. We list only dates that appear in an official RRB notice. Anything else is marked as unconfirmed.
• Speed, mistake and font rules are labelled. Facts we could not verify in the current notice are now flagged "check the notice" instead of stated as certain.
• UG and graduate tests are kept apart. CEN 07/2025 (undergraduate) and CEN 06/2025 (graduate) are separate notifications.

What is the RRB NTPC typing skill test (CBTST)?

The RRB NTPC typing skill test is a computer-based test for typist posts. It is held after CBT-2 and only for candidates shortlisted for posts that need it.

The RRB call notice for CEN 07/2025 says shortlisting for Document Verification is based on CBT-2 performance. For posts where CBAT or CBTST applies, it is based on CBT-2 plus CBAT/CBTST performance. CBAT is the Computer Based Aptitude Test, used for some other posts.

Whether the CBTST is qualifying only or adds marks to merit should be read from the CBTST notice for your post. Earlier railway typing tests were generally treated as qualifying. This guide does not assume the same for your cycle.

Which NTPC posts need the typing test?

In the undergraduate CEN 07/2025, the typing posts are Junior Clerk cum Typist and Accounts Clerk cum Typist. Other UG posts, such as clerk or guard-type roles without "typist" in the title, do not have a typing test. Check your post code and the notice to be sure.

Many pages blur these two tests. Use only the notice of the CEN under which you applied.

RRB NTPC CBTST date 2026: stage timeline, city slip and admit card

The RRB NTPC UG CBTST date has not been confirmed by us from an official notice. Check your regional RRB website, because RRB schedules, cities and shifts are announced there.

Here is the timeline we can source:

Some websites report a UG CBTST date of 27 November 2026 and give expected dates for the city slip and admit card. We have not confirmed any of these in an official RRB notice. Those sites also disagree on when the notice itself was issued. Treat all of these as unverified until you see the date on rrb.gov.in pages or your e-call letter.

The city intimation slip and the admit card are separate documents. The slip tells you the city and date so you can plan travel. The admit card is the document you carry to the centre. Do not book travel on the strength of a website's "expected" date.

How much typing speed is needed: 30 WPM English, 25 WPM Hindi?

The commonly reported RRB NTPC typing speed is 30 words per minute in English or 25 words per minute in Hindi. That works out to roughly 300 and 250 words in a 10-minute test.

We could not open the CBTST notice text to confirm these figures. The CEN 07/2025 notice for your post, and the instruction screen at the centre, are final on the speed, the duration, the minimum words and any warm-up screen.

Whatever the exact benchmark, aim well above it in practice:

• English: if the benchmark is 30 WPM, practise until you can hold 38-42 WPM gross on unseen passages.
• Hindi: if it is 25 WPM, practise until you can hold 32-36 WPM gross.

A nervous exam-day dip then still leaves you above the line.

How are mistakes counted in the RRB NTPC typing test?

Government typing tests usually compare your typed text word by word with the passage and penalise differences as full or half mistakes. The exact RRB definition for this cycle should be read from the notice or the on-screen instructions.

The common convention is:

• Full mistake: a skipped word, a wrong word, an extra word, a repeated word or a misspelt word.
• Half mistake: a wrong or missing punctuation mark, a capitalisation error, or a spacing slip.

Candidates often assume that high gross speed saves them. It does not, because the pass mark is judged on speed after mistakes are counted.

Worked example (illustration only): you type 380 words in 10 minutes and make 12 full mistakes. If each full mistake removes one word, net speed is (380 - 12) / 10 = 36.8 WPM. A candidate who types 340 words with 4 mistakes gets (340 - 4) / 10 = 33.6 WPM. The first candidate is faster even after penalties, but only because the mistake count stays low relative to speed. Other formulas exist, so read how full and half mistakes are calculated for the variants.

Backspace and editing keys. RRB typing skill tests have generally restricted editing, but do not assume which keys are disabled in your test. The on-screen instructions state it. Practise without backspace, as explained in is backspace allowed in government typing tests.

Hindi typing: Kruti Dev or Mangal, and language choice

For Hindi, follow the font and keyboard wording in the CEN 07/2025 notice and the test interface, not coaching rumours. Kruti Dev is a Remington-style non-Unicode font. Mangal is a Unicode font. Which one the test uses, or whether you get a choice, must be confirmed in your notice.

1. Pick one layout early and practise only on it.
2. Read the instruction screen at the centre before you start.
3. Drill half letters, conjuncts, nukta and chandrabindu. Most Hindi errors come from these, not from plain syllables.

Language choice. The test is taken in either English or Hindi, not both. Whether your language is fixed at the application stage or chosen at the test is a detail of your notice. Do not plan to switch at the terminal, and prepare in the language you intend to type.

How to pass the NTPC typing test (typing test kaise pass kare)

You pass by hitting the benchmark after mistakes are deducted, on an unseen passage, with the editing keys off. This two-week plan assumes you already type at 20-25 WPM and have 45-60 minutes a day.

1. Days 1-2: take a baseline on the free RRB NTPC typing practice test. Note your gross speed and mistake count.
2. Days 3-4: drill your 15 most-mistyped words and your punctuation habits. Practise capital letters after full stops.
3. Days 5-7: type 5-minute unseen passages without backspace. Aim for under 3% mistakes before raising speed.
4. Days 8-10: move to full 10-minute runs. Check where your accuracy drops, which is usually around minute seven.
5. Days 11-13: run exam simulations: fixed time, no backspace, an unfamiliar passage and the same layout you will use on the day. Log every mistake.
6. Day 14: rest your hands. Do one light 5-minute run and check your documents and reporting details.

Day-of checklist:

• Carry the admit card and valid photo ID listed in the intimation.
• Reach before the reporting cut-off.
• Test the keyboard on any warm-up screen and report a faulty key before the evaluated attempt starts.
• Read the on-screen instructions fully. Hindi candidates should check the font and layout carefully.
• Start steady and do not chase the timer in the last two minutes.

The date is not confirmed by us from an official source. Some websites report 27 November 2026 for the UG CBTST, but those reports are unverified. The RRB CBTST notice, your regional RRB website and your e-call letter are the only reliable sources.

Use whichever font and layout the CEN 07/2025 notice and the test screen name. Kruti Dev is Remington-style and non-Unicode, while Mangal is Unicode. Practise on one layout only, and read the instruction screen carefully on the day.

Is the RRB NTPC typing test qualifying only, or are marks added to merit?
